May 28th is National Hamburger Day! We celebrated last night with a few drinks followed by a trip around the corner to Burger Meister on Church Street. Despite it’s thinness, this 1/4 pound Niman Ranch patty was juicy and flavorful- and just right for us, but there are plenty of options including kicking it up to a 1/2 pounder, if you’re in need of a larger bite. We ordered one “double cheese” with cheddar and one burger with a generous amount of blue cheese. The buns were classic sesame seed- warm, soft and delicious. This is the kind of burger you crave late at night – a perfect post drinks burger: simple, easy, and with a satisfying amount of grease. Burger Meister has all the fixings of a fast food joint but enough patience to grille each burger to order. Our medium-rare request was well met and greatly appreciated. And everyone there manages to stay really pleasant even when the line is out the door. It must be a west coast thing. Please say hello to Andrew if you see him!

I visited Burgermeister this evening and was satisfied by the small details. I got the smaller burger with bleu cheese and sauteed onions, inspired by their “San Francisco” burger, which also includes sauteed mushrooms. Not my thing, mushrooms. I too requested my meat medium rare but it got there more medium, which didn’t ruin anything as the patty and toppings were moist enough. I thought the burger was pretty good, although if that’s the best burger in SF (Bay Guardian and SF Weekly, apparently), they didn’t show all their cards tonight. It wasn’t spectacular, but serviceable and tasty. I wouldn’t say it didn’t hit the spot.
A great detail is how you could split your side between fries and a salad, which is perfect for me. That way I could get a mini salad and fries instead of a bigger portion of one of them. I also enjoyed how it got smoky inside and smelled really good. Really attractive crowd while I was there. The beer tap is not bad at all: Fat Tire, Prohibition, Stella, etc. but a wee bit pricey at $6.50 each. (c’mon, where are we? New York? gimme a break, $6.50!)
